The Incarnates of Elementus exist as conduits between the fixed stars and the mortal world, bridging cosmic energies through the Astral Plane. Each Incarnate’s very essence resonates with particular clusters of light—traces of ancient starry knowledge left on mortal lands. This connection manifests through the patterns played during the game, where each Sigil and arrangement reflect an Incarnate’s attempt to harness the celestial vibrations humming beneath visible reality. In these intertwined realms, the Mortal’s journey toward Divinity receives subtle guidance from these elemental guardians.
On the Astral Ring Board, patterns come to life depending on how closely an Incarnate’s elemental affinity aligns with the pattern’s own element. If an Incarnate shares the same element (Water to Water, Air to Air), the pattern resonates in a harmonious flow. But if their affinity diverges—such as Water Incarnates wrestling with a Fire-born pattern—then the very rings of the board move more turbulently, and the path to completion grows fraught. Thus, the board itself becomes a cosmic map, depicting the closeness or estrangement of each elemental domain as it swirls in astral rotation.
Take for example a Water Incarnate, hoping to wield the might of a Fire-based pattern. Water stands diametrically opposed to Fire, so the Incarnate alone cannot reach such searing planes. To pierce that elemental barrier, it needs the assistance of a Fire Incarnate already in play, one who can open a path into the realm of flames. Together they combine their partial truths of the Astral Plane so the Mortal can unlock rare, powerful patterns—even if it comes at a steep cost in resources or synergy.
Beneath these struggles lies a shared motive: aiding the Mortal’s ascent to the Realm of Divinity. In that sense, each Incarnate serves like a guiding angel, faithful to one elemental current but still striving toward a grander destiny. Hovering above them are the Arcanum, transcendent beings dwelling in a fifth element known as Spirit—an amalgam of all four elements that created the Incarnates long ago. This mystery defies mortal comprehension: how could the four separate elements, so often in tension, weave together into a hidden unity? Such is the riddle of the Arcanum, existing forever beyond mortal understanding, yet ever willing to guide those bold enough to seek that higher plane.
